At first, you might think that we have arrived at a luxurious holiday destination in the heart of Bali, but the truth is, we’ve never even left Singapore. This remarkable house creates an intimate retreat in the heart of the urban area in the renowned Lion City, inspired entirely by the lush tropics and tranquil elegance of a Balinese resort.
With an extended experience spanning over 20 years of transforming people’s dreams into reality, Nic & Wes Builders get a lot of special requirements from their clients. Each house is unique, reflecting the owner’s personality and tastes. In this case, the brief was an interesting one: bringing Bali to Singapore. The inspiration for the design was the Bali experience, with luxuriant plants and natural materials to create a tranquil and intimate private sanctuary.
The entrance conducts toward a protected yet mysterious feeling, like entering an unknown forest. Through the palm trees, you can see an intriguing house with traditional Balinese wooden roofing and a facade beautifully finished with tactile natural stone. Once you go through the front door, a cool breeze follows you into the living room, where warm earthy hues create an instant calming effect.
One great challenge was the narrow inter-terrace plot, which typically results in a dim interior with poor ventilation. Nic & Wes Builders solved this creatively by keeping the initial house at the front and constructing an additional Annex at the rear. These two structures were linked through bridges, creating an air well that opened into a swimming pool — providing cross-ventilation for the home. This volumetric composition also takes a cue from traditional Balinese houses, which distribute functional spaces across numerous structures.
The pool design further embraces Balinese inspiration with a natural stone wall finish, complemented by verdant greenery, evoking the ambience of a hidden cave found on a secret island. The spacious bedrooms share common neutral tones and rich ornamentation that add character to this multi-generational home. For the bathrooms, wood finishes and plants create the same tropical aesthetic of a Balinese resort.
The house has various amenities: a spacious private movie room, a rooftop garden with a gorgeous gazebo, and verdant plants throughout. Traditional Balinese architecture seeks harmony with nature — a feature achieved here through natural materials such as wood for the roofing and andesite natural stone for the exterior feature walls.
